CANNABIS BASICS
Indica vs sativa: beyond the label
What these familiar names can tell you, where they fall short, and what to ask about a flower profile.
THE KEY POINT
Indica and sativa labels are not a reliable prescription for how a product will affect you.
A familiar label, an incomplete picture
Indica and sativa appear throughout cannabis menus. They are convenient terms for discussing a collection, but reading a label is only the beginning of understanding a particular product.
A 2021 study in Nature Plants examined more than 100 cannabis samples. The researchers found that indica- and sativa-labelled samples were not clearly separated genetically across the genome. Instead, labelling was associated with differences in a small number of terpenes. This study looked at plant chemistry and genetics; it was not a clinical trial predicting patient outcomes.
Ask about the actual product
When discussing a flower profile, ask which batch is available and what information supports its description. Is there a cannabinoid analysis? Does the information apply to this batch? Which details are measured and which are descriptive?
On our collection page, classification and aroma notes help you explore the range. Treat them as conversation starters with the team. A familiar name should not replace a discussion of your own circumstances with a clinician.
Bring better questions to the consultation
Instead of asking only whether a flower is indica or sativa, ask why a particular option is being considered, what information supports that choice, and how any concerns will be followed up. You can also ask the clinician to explain unfamiliar terminology in plain language.
