CANNABINOIDS
CBD and THC: understanding the difference
A plain-language introduction to two cannabinoids, the limits of product claims, and questions for your clinician.
THE KEY POINT
CBD and THC are different compounds. Neither a percentage nor a product name tells you whether treatment is suitable for you.
Two compounds, different considerations
THC and CBD are two major cannabinoids found in cannabis. THC is primarily responsible for cannabis-related changes in mental state. CBD has a different profile, but that does not make it risk-free.
The NCCIH reports that CBD can cause side effects and interact with other medicines. It also highlights that some products contain amounts of cannabinoids that differ from their labels. Product quality and a discussion with a healthcare professional matter.
Medical evidence is specific
Evidence for a particular cannabinoid medicine, formulation or condition does not automatically apply to every cannabis product. The NCCIH describes benefits for some specific uses alongside limitations and uncertainties. Cannabis should not delay assessment of a medical problem.
What to ask about a label
Bring the product label or a clear photograph to your consultation if you want help understanding it. Ask the clinician to explain the listed amounts, the formulation and any instructions you do not understand. Write your questions down so they are easy to revisit.
You might ask: What is the purpose of this option in my situation? What should I know about my existing medicines? Who should I contact if I have concerns? What information should I keep for follow-up? This article does not provide a dose or recommend a CBD-to-THC ratio.
